Frederic Bourdin is a French serial impostor and the press has nicknamed him “The Chameleon”. He started his impersonations as a child and claims to have assumed at least 500 false identities, 3 of which have been of actual teenage missing people. Nicholas Barclay was the youngest one in his family and he had an older sister as well as a brother. During his childhood, he always remained surrounded by a number of legal troubles. He also has a juvenile criminal record. His crimes included stealing things, entering and breaking.

Nicholas Barclay was aged 13 years at the time he went missing was was last seen playing basketball with friends nearby house his hometown of San Antonio, Texas on the 13th of  June in 1994. He never made it home and has not been seen or heard from since then. In 1997, Frederic Bourdin took Barclay’s identity and was flown to the United States.

Nicholas was Caucasian with light brown hair, blue eyes, and weighed around 79 pounds (36 kgs) and was 4’8” tall. Barclay was the youngest of three children, and had an older brother and sister. Nicholas often got into trouble with the law and even had a juvenile criminal record from an early age  for stealing, or breaking and entering.

On the day he disappeared, he was playing basketball with his friends when he called his elder brother Jason for a ride back home but Jason refused the ride and asked Nicholas to walk home.

Moreover, Bourdin had brown eyes and a French accent, he convinced the family who was having their blue-eyed son, saying he had escaped from a child prostitution ring and ring had altered his eye color. Bourdin lived with the family for almost 5 months until the 6th of March in 1998.

When Frédéric learned that Nicholas had a distinctive finger tattoo, he managed to get himself a same tattoo.

In 1997, a local private investigator grew suspicious while he was working with a Television crew that had been filming the family. Investigators compared a photo of Bourdin’s ears to Nicholas’s ears and discovered that they aren’t the same. In February of 1998, the FBI obtained a court order to take the young man’s fingerprints and the DNA, which was later on identified as belonging to Bourdin. In September of 1998, he pleaded guilty to passport fraud and perjury in a San Antonio federal court. He was imprisoned for around 6 years.

According to several interviews, he has been looking for the “love and affection” and attention he never received as a child and he has pretended to be an orphan numerous times.

The Imposter is made about Bourdin’s impersonation, of Nicholas Barclay and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2012.

Frederic Bourdin hails from Nanterre, Bourdin, and was raised by his grandparents in Nantes. Later he ran away and then eventually went to Paris, France.

On the 8th of August in 2007, Frederic Bourdin married a French woman who is named Isabelle after a year-long courtship. The duo resides in France with 5 kids. On 23rd of March in 2017, Bourdin made a Facebook post stating that his wife Isabelle had left him for another man, claiming that she had been unhappy for 10 years and very unhappy in recent months. He also claims that she left him with their children.
