The film follows a Frenchman Frederic Bourdin who travels the world impersonating missing individuals, including the time he fooled a family and the authorities in Texas into believing he was Nicholas Barclay, a missing 13-year-old who bore little similarity to the man in question.
The Imposter, directed by Bart Layton, is a documentary that elaborates on the strange occurrence by using archival television footage, reenactments, and interviews with people who were there at the time. This award-winning documentary also includes commentary by Bourdin. The following is a complete summary of The Imposter.
Is Netflix’s The Imposter Based On Actual Events?
The documentary about Nicholas Barclay and Frederic Bourdin is based on real events. How did Frédéric Bourdin become famous, and what exactly did he do? Bourdin was born in the western suburbs of Paris in the French district of Nanterre in 1974.
Considering his mother’s claim that she wed a guy named Kaci, who she believed to be Bourdin’s father, Algerian ancestry is a reasonable assumption about his background. Despite this, his grandparents nurtured Bourdin in Nantes until he was a teenager, at which point he went away to Paris.
The individual is known to be a serial impostor who has assumed the identities of several missing people, albeit it is unknown when he first felt the urge to start dressing up. Frederic Bourdin has remarked in interviews that all he wants is “love and affection” and the attention he never had as a kid. On multiple occasions, he has posed as an orphan.
After Nicholas Barclay admitted to passport fraud and perjury, he was given a six-year prison sentence. But even while locked up, the Imposter kept up the pretence he’d made with Barclay. Once he was released from an American prison, he went back to France and pretended to be other missing individuals there.
Frederic Bourdin Changing Multiple Characters
After relocating to Grenoble, France, in 2003, he falsely claimed to be Léo Balley, a 14-year-old French child who had been missing since 1996. Next year, he pretended to be Rubén Sánchez Espinoza, a missing adolescent from Spain whose mother had been killed in the bombings in Madrid the year before. Once the authorities learned the truth, they deported him back to France.
In 2005, Frederic Bourdin resumed his adventures by enrolling for a month at the Collège Jean Monnet in Pau, France, under the guise of Francisco Hernandes-Fernandez, a 15-year-old Spanish orphan. He pretended his parents had been killed in an accident, donned a teenybopper getup, hid his thinning hair under a baseball cap, and experimented with a variety of facial creams to fool others into thinking he was a young adult.
The school, however, found out the truth after watching a TV broadcast that revealed his true nature and criminal history. He was found guilty of possessing and utilising the former fictitious identity of Léo Balley later that year and sentenced to four months in prison.
Where has Frederic Bourdin gone?
After dating for a year, Bourdin tied the knot with a Frenchwoman named Isabelle in 2007. According to an interview with David Grann in The New Yorker, we know that the couple lives in France and has five children, one of whom is assumed to be a girl. When asked if he had changed his ways since becoming a father and a spouse, Frederic Bourdin said, “no, this is who I am” in the interview.
After 10 years of marriage, Bourdin wrote on Facebook that his wife Isabelle had broken up with him and was seeing another man. It is now unknown whether or not Bourdin has succeeded in saving his marriage and where his five children are.
Called an “exceedingly clever” man by the U.S. State Department, Bourdin ran his serial imposter career from 1990 to 2007 and reportedly took up nearly 500 false identities with the 48 year old currently a free man and on Instagram and TikTok.
