O’Neill underwent a haemorrhage and was put in the hospital on Saturday. And the Uruguayan FA afterwards released a statement in which it acknowledged his passing. It said: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Fabián O’Neill, a former member of the Uruguayan National Team. “We offer our sympathies to your family and friends. RIP.”
Numerous athletes and journalists lauded O’Neill, who is known as “El Mago” (The Wizard), for his skill and technique on the field. According to France24, former Juventus legend Zinedine Zidane termed Fabian the most skilled and gifted footballer he has ever seen. He became an alcoholic during and after his career, lost his riches to gambling, and retired at age 29 before passing away 20 years later.
Career summary
With Nacional, O’Neill began his professional career in Uruguay in 1992 and won the league in his debut campaign. And three years later he moved to Cagliari in Italy. He moved to Juventus in 2000, but after just one season of service with the Turin powerhouses, he was loaned out to Perugia. Later, he joined Nacional once more until leaving in 2003.
O’Neill played for Uruguay on 19 occasions and scored twice. Despite missing all of the group games due to injury, he was a member of the team that lost in the first round of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
O’Neill was transferred to Juventus for a cost of 20 billion lire (€10 million) when Cagliari was demoted. He went onto reveal in 2017 that he had lost his entire net worth of $17 million.
Personal life and death
O’Neill had a son, two daughters, and two sons, all of whom were born to different mothers. Favio, his son, was a defensive midfielder for Pearol’s under-19 team as of December 2021; Martina, his middle child, was a field hockey player as of June 2020.
In June 2020, O’Neill was admitted to the hospital with cirrhosis. He was told he may have a liver transplant and live a long life if he didn’t drink for a year. O’Neill passed away on December 25, 2022, at the age of 49 in a hospital in Montevideo, where he had been receiving urgent care owing to bleeding from chronic liver disease.
