In Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup match between Manchester United and Burnley, new chants concerning Cristiano Ronaldo could be heard from the Old Trafford stands.

After deciding to quit the Premier League team with immediate effect and mutual understanding, the 37-year-old attacker is now a free agent. It happened after Ronaldo resisted being used as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in October. Ten Hag chose to start Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford up front instead.

Ronaldo has been playing for Portugal in the World Cup this winter since leaving Old Trafford at the end of November, while United just played La Liga team, Cadiz, in a mid-season friendly.

As soon as the Reds faced Burnley in the Carabao Cup round of 16 this week, their first competitive match since his departure, fans immediately brought up the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. Several videos from Old Trafford show supporters singing: “I don’t care about Ronnie. Ronnie don’t care about me. All I care about is MUFC.”

A fan wrote: “He is one of United’s best players and you disrespect him like that. He won you a Champions League,” while another wrote: “United fans begged for a player to speak out, Ronaldo spoke out, United fans turn on him.”

A third fan wrote: “I feel embarrassed as a United fan. I used to say this is his real home over Madrid. I was wrong. Sorry Madrid fans accept my apology.”

Meanwhile, Ronaldo is currently clubless. In recent days, the ex Real Madrid legend has been extensively connected with a €200 million per season agreement with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. He will overtake Michael Jordan as the highest-paid athlete in the world if he decides to sign it.

Ronaldo’s last World Cup ended in tears as his side was knocked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar against Morocco with a score of 1-0. Whereas, his rival Lionel Messi had a fairytale ending where the Argentine won his 1st World Cup trophy with Argentina against France.
