At age 16, Berg-Brousseau made headlines when he spoke out against a bill in Kentucky that would have made it harder for transgender people to use the bathroom. John Oliver pointed out in a 2015 segment on trans rights that featured the young man’s testimony that Republican state lawmakers praised his bravery and eloquence, but then voted to move the bill forward anyway. The young man’s testimony was part of that segment.

Berg-Brousseau became a full-time advocate after college. He got a job at a leading LGBTQ+ rights group at a time when anti-trans bills were being passed all over the country.

A Washington Post analysis found that there were only 19 anti-trans bills introduced in statehouses across the country in 2018. By 2022, there were 155, which was more than at any other time in the country’s history. Most restrictions were put on transgender teens and young adults.

Henry Berg-Brousseau was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 9, 1998. His mother, US Senator Karen Berg, was there at the time. He went to Louisville Collegiate School and graduated. He has worked as his mother’s Deputy Campaign Manager. Brousseau has also worked for the Delta Lambda Phi Social Fraternity and was a field organiser for the political group Show Me Change, which is based in the US state of Missouri.
In 2020, he left his home town to work for Show Me Change in Missouri. In her statement, the US Senator said, “He finally found a community when he was 24 years old, but that didn’t fix the brokenness he already felt.”
His mother said that he killed himself when he was 24 years old. In a statement she put out, she said, “My son Henry killed himself early last Friday.”
