In our ancient literature, particularly those written in the Indian classical language of Sanskrit, many puzzles and unsolved riddles provide solutions to contemporary issues.

While many puzzles are already solved, many are still waiting for their answer. Similarly, one such two thousand four hundred years old puzzle was recently solved. And it was done by a Cambridge-educated Indian researcher.

The old Sanskrit manuscripts produced by the ancient scholar Panini included a grammatical issue that has baffled modern academics for centuries. However, Rishi Atul Rajpopat, a Ph.D. student from St John’s College, Cambridge, just resolved it recently.

Panini taught a “metarule” which, according to conventional interpretation by scholars, states that “in the event of a conflict between two rules of equal strength, the rule that comes later in the grammar’s serial order wins” However,ย theย resultsย wereย frequentlyย linguisticallyย flawed.

But Rishi Rajpopat challenged this conventional reading of the metarule by arguing that Panini intended for us to select the rule that applies to the right side of a word, rather than the rule that applies to the left.

He concluded practically without fail, Panini’s “language machine” created grammatically sound words.

Who Is Rishi Rajpopat?

Rishi Rajpopat is an Indian scholar. He has been in the news because he recently solved the 2,400-year-old Sanskrit grammar problem from Panini’s manuscripts.

After completing his schooling in India, he went to Yale University and studied linguistics and economics there. Later, he attended St. Xavierโ€™s College where he got a bachelorโ€™s degree in economics. He also attended Oxford University where he got a masterโ€™s degree in Sanskrit.

Later, he attended and studied advanced Bengali. He got his doctorate in Philosophy and Ph.D. in Sanskrit from the University of Cambridge.

He is proficient in 12 languages including Sanskrit and Greek.

His Career

Rishi Rajpopat became a Gonda Postdoctoral Fellow at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Later, he became an Academic Editor (Hinduism) at the University of St Andrews.
