On the opening day of 2022 English Open, 65th-ranked Page had a chance to eliminate Trump in the decisive frame but was unable to capitalize, and the world number two qualified for Tuesday’s round-of-64 to clash against Craig Steadman. Meanwhile, Robertson had a great start to his championship defense, defeating Andrew Pagett 4-0 in 61 minutes with breaks of 110, 122, 67, & 88.

Another match saw four-time Crucible champion Higgins defeat Gerard Greene by a score of 4-0. Thanks to his breaks of 69, 51, 71, 78, & 111, Murphy defeated Anthony Hamilton 4-2 in another held-over match. With a break of 128 to win 4-3, Selby was able to defeat Noppon Saengkham in the decisive frame. Elsewhere, with high break of 67, amateur Callum Beresford stunned Ryan Thomerson to win 4-1 and Zhao Xintong defeated Allan Taylor by score of 4-2.

In the highlight game of opening day, reigning world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan struggled against Ben Mertens before securing comeback victory by score of 4-3. During other matches of evening session, Mark Allen won by score of 4-1 against Mitchell Mann and Kyren Wilson eliminated Reanne Evans with an impressive white-wash victory.
