From the beginning to the end, the game was full of tension. Just before the end of the game, Virgil van Dijk beat Leandro Paredes. That led to a fight in the dugouts, and the tension stayed high through extra time and the penalty shootout.
It’s strange to see, but there were even fights during the penalty shootout. Andries Noppert pushed Martinez before Martinez scored the winning penalty. It doesn’t get much better.
Martinez soon won the shoot-out, but the rowing didn’t stop. The players from Argentina made their way to the two Martinez’s, who were their heroes, but not before taunting the defeated Dutch along the way.
The Dutch manager Gaal has never gotten along well with the Argentines. This was clear in the days before this game, when he and Angel Di Maria exchanged what we’ll call “pleasantries.”

Whatever it was, Lionel Messi must have been upset, because after the shootout, it came out that Messi and the Dutch manager got into an argument, and Messi told Van Gaal that he talks too much.
