He worked in Greece for the most of the 2000s, primarily with AEK Athens and PAOK. He assumed leadership of the Greece national team in 2010 and guided them through one European Championship and one World Cup. He then guided Portugal to its first two big victories in the history of the country, the Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League.
The Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa granted Santos a degree in electrical and telecommunications engineering in 1977. He was known as Engenheiro do Penta (Penta’s engineer) since he was in command when Porto won its fifth straight championship in 1999. Santos started working as a manager soon after retiring from sport. In 1991, he helped Estoril reclaim its place in the elite division. He worked solely on that competition for ten years, managing Porto (from November 22, 1994, to June 30, 1998), and Estrela da Amadora (1998 – 2001). He won the Portuguese Supercup and the national championship in his first year at Porto. In 2001, he then joined AEK Athens in the Super League Greece, winning the Greek cup but finishing last in the standings. After spending only four months at Panathinaikos, he then went back to manage Sporting CP for one season.
Fernando Santos employs a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 formation.
