When the Syrian civil war endangers their lives, it becomes clear that Sara and Yusra must leave for Germany. The sisters begin their journey to Germany from Greece after Sara, Yusra, and a number of other refugees manage to reach that country.

Who Is Sara Mardini?
Sara Mardini is a well-known Syrian professional swimmer. She has been in the news because Netflix recently released the film “The Swimmers” which is based on her story.
In the Syrian capital of Damascus, she was born in 1995. Her parents’ names are Ezzat Mardini and Mervat Mardini. She has a sister named Yusra Mardini.
She did her schooling at the local school in Syria. She was attending a law school when the Syrian civil war break out in her country. She is currently unmarried.
Later, she traveled to Germany with her sister when she was 20 years old. They flew to Istanbul, Turkey, and from there boarded a boat for Greece. The two sisters swam to the Greek island of Lesbos where they started their trek to Germany. They finally relocated to Berlin.
Her Career
Sara Mardini was also a professional lifeguard and a brilliant swimmer. However, she had to end her professional swimming career reportedly due to a shoulder injury, while her sister continued to pursue her dream of becoming an Olympian by participating in swimming training sessions.
Sara joined her sister Yusra at the 2016 Rio Olympics to cheer her on.
Where Is She Now?
She went back to Lesbos refugee camps after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio to empower the local kids. She joined a non-governmental organization called Emergency Response Center International (ERCI).
However, she was detained by Greek police in August 2018 together with ERCI’s field director Nassos Karakitsos and a German volunteer called Seรกn Binder as they waited to board a flight back to Germany at Mytilini Airport.
According to sources, Sara was accused of smuggling, forging, spying, using radio frequencies illegally, and fraud, among other offenses. Since being arrested, sheย has always maintained her innocence. She has been released from jail on bail after 107 days thanks to the efforts of her attorneys.
