Karen Diaz Brief Bio

Karen Diaz full name Karen Janet Díaz Medina was born in Aguascalientes and is currently aged at 38. Diaz apparently got her passion for soccer from her father when she was just a child.

She finished her degree in Agroindustrial Engineering before eventually becoming a referee. Back in an interview, Díaz mentioned how she started off getting paid only 55 Mexican pesos for her first game as a referee.

Referee Career

Karen Diaz was working at a youth sports center when her interest in football refereeing initially peaked.

Diaz explained about her first game in an interview:

The 38-year-old veteran now has twelve years of experience as a referee. She has been featured as an official for Liga MX matches ever since 2016.

While sharing about her passion for sports, Diaz states her love for soccer, which led to her referee career. She shared how being a referee makes her fall more in love more with it every day. She further shared how serving as a referee is a fantastic experience, which involves all of a person’s senses in each game.

FIFA World Cup 2022 Referee Salary: $70,000 + $3,000 match fee.

Notable Achievements

Diaz became the first woman to officiate in a Liga MX final back in 2020.She achieved the feat when serving as an assistant referee for the second leg Pumas vs Leon clash.

Back in 2018, FIFA certified Diaz as an official FIFA referee and featured in several high-profile games:

  • Concacaf under-17 women’s championships in Nicaragua in 2018
  • Concacaf under-20 men’s championships in Florida 2018
  • Scotiabank Concacaf League in 2020

The 38-year-old Mexican also featured on the reserve twice in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. She was tasked as the reserve assistant in both the Morocco-Croatia clash and the Portugal-Ghana face off. A reserve assistant can be called upon to replace an assistant referee when one of them suffers severe injuries or other medical problems.

Besides those roles, Diaz also took the responsibility of maintaining order on both benches as well as announcing player substitutions.
