Paolo Banchero’s selection as the first overall choice in the draught was unexpected, but the big Duke product has already contributed. In some strange way, the Sacramento Kings passed on Jaden Ivey, which allowed Benedict Mathurin to find the ideal position. Mathurin has so far been looking great in Indiana.

Player Latest Odds Odds on November 22
Paolo Banchero -500 -560
Bennedict Mathurin +300 +350
Jaden Ivey +2,000 +2,000
Keegan Murray +10,000 +8,000
Shaedon Sharpe +25,000 +15,000
Jabari Smith Jr. +25,000 +15,000
A.J. Griffin +25,000 N/A
Malaki Branham +50,000 +25,000
Jalen Duren +50,000 +25,000
Tari Eason +50,000 +25,000
Jeremy Sochan +50,000 +25,000

The greatest choice to win the trophy would have been Banchero, even if he hadn’t been chosen first overall.

The 19-year-old is already physically mature for his age, standing at 6’10” with a sturdy 250-pound body. From a skill perspective, he is also well polished. Interior finishing, midrange jumpers, outstanding ball handling for his stature, acceptable efficiency beyond the arc, and even some deft passing are all in his toolbox.

Banchero is off to a fantastic start and not only has all the offensive skills you could want. The forward for the Orlando Magic has scored 20 points or more in nine of his first eleven NBA contests, and he currently leads the rookie scoring list.

This is Banchero’s award to lose if he stays healthy. That’s been called into question a little bit because of an ankle injury, but as long as he returns quickly, he should win the championship.

Other NBA Rookie of the Year choices:

Best value: Bennedict Mathurin (+300)

Mathurin will topple Banchero if anyone is going to do it by filling out the stat sheet.

The Canadian guard has so far been a lethal offensive weapon for the Indiana Pacers, shooting the lights out and handling a significant amount of the strain. Given his usage rate of 27.0%, Mathurin should have a great chance to continue leading a team deficient in offensive weapons in scoring nearly 20 points per game.

The 20-year-role old’s has opportunity for improvement as well. He currently plays 28 minutes each night as a sixth man, but as the season progresses, his workload may rise, which would put pressure on his scoring totals. Mathurin is the greatest choice to step in if Banchero starts to falter.

Player to watch: Jaden Ivey (+2,000)

Ivey was positioned well when the Sacramento Kings passed on him with the fourth pick. When Ivey joins Detroit’s backcourt, he can team up with 2021 first-round pick Cade Cunningham to form a potent thunder-and-lightning combo.

Ivey’s incredible quickness and capacity for cutting to the basket will be complemented by Cunningham’s methodical pace, great passing, and outside shooting. It’s not difficult to imagine Cunningham utilising his backdoor cuts and the dynamism of his transition game to their full potential. The 20-year-old has drawn comparisons to Ja Morant due to his game-changing quickness.

Ivey has the benefit of being a lot of fun to watch in addition to the Xs and Os. Given his capacity to produce highlight-reel plays, he stands a decent chance of remaining in voters’ minds for the entire year.
