Ashok Mahto’s Arrest

Ashok Mahto was imprisoned but he escaped from Nawada jail in 2002. Pintu Mahto killed 3 police officers during the prison breakout and the leader of the gang is said to belong to the kurmi-Koeri caste, and also was supported by the backward castes in the Nawada and Sheikhpura regions.

In 2022, a Sheikhpura court acquitted Ashok and Pinto of the murder of Rajo Singh due to a lack of evidence. Presently, Ashok Mahto is incarcerated in Nawada jail after being arrested in 2006. The details of his family are not known.

The Mahto gang was waging a war of retribution against the upper-caste Bhumihar. Ashok Mahto and his gang were also responsible for the killings of a massive number of the Forward Caste people in the early 1990s.

Ashok Mahto And Singh Rivalry

The rivalry between the 2, Mahto and gangster Akhilesh Singh affected more than 100 villages in the Nawada, Nalanda and the Sheikhpura districts of Bihar. Between 1998 and 2006, the rivalry which claimed over 200 lives in Nawada district took place from the caste conflict between Bhumihars and Kurmis. The clash and rivalry between the 2 strong groups would decide power over stone-crushing and sand-lifting arrangements in the affected districts.

Later in 2003, the Mahto gang allegedly killed the father of a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Aruna Devi – the wife of Akhilesh Singh – and 5 others, including just a 6 year old boy. It was reported the killings were in retaliation for the deaths of 7 laborers who were killed by the Akhilesh Singh gang. In 2000 they did an attack in the same MLA’s house and killed more than 10 people.

The Mahto-Singh rivalry was between 2 gangs for supremacy but a mobilization of the castes in support of each of these two gangs also took place. During the elections of 2005, Aruna Devi who is the wife of Akhilesh Singh, was a Lok Janshakti Party candidate for the region’s legislative assembly. As one of her supporters, the charges of murder and abduction upon Akhilesh Singh were frivolous and he had taken up arms to fight for the honor of his community which were the Bhumihars.
