Lachit Barphukanโs Family
49 year old Lachit Borphukan was known to be the youngest son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua. Lachit belonged to the indigenous Tai Ahom faith and his father Momai Tamuli Borbarua was a bonded laborer against a loan of four rupees. Later on, he turned to the ministerโs post and Lachit was selected for the position of Borphukan by Chakradhwaj Singha.
Lachit Barphukan History
After being defeated by Lachit and his forces, the Mughal army sailed up the Brahmaputra river from Dhaka towards the state of Assam advancing to Guwahati. The Mughal Army under Ram Singh I consisted of 30,000 infantry, 15,000 archers, 18,000 Turkish cavalries, 5,000 gunners, and more than 1000 cannons apart from a large flotilla of boats
Ram Singh, the Mughal commander chief failed to do any advance against the Assamese army during the first phase of the war. An arrow carried a letter by Ram Singh stating that Lachit has been paid rupees one lakh and he should evacuate Guwahati was fired into the Ahom camp which reached Ahom king, Chakradhwaj Singha. Moreover, the king started to doubt Lachit’s sincerity and patriotism.
Prime Minister Atan Buragohain convinced the King that this was just a trick against Lachit Barphukan.ย Borphukan was victorious and the Mughals were forced for retreating from Guwahati
Lachit Barphukanโs Legacy
On the 24th of November, it is celebrated as Lachit Divas or Lachit Day in the state of Assam to commemorate the heroism of Lachit Borphukan and the victory of the Assamese army at the Battle of the Saraighat. An award has been honored to notable personalities of Assam by Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad.
Lachit Borphukan’s Maidam
Lachit Borphukan’s Maidam was constructed in memory of Lachit Borphukan at Jorhat, Assam. It’s about 8 km far from the popular Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary. Here the last remains of Borphukan were laid under this tomb (Maidam)in 1672 which was constructed by Swargadeo Udayaditya Singha.
