Sunday’s 2022 ATP Finals championship match will feature 21-time Major champion Novak Djokovic versus World No. 4 Casper Ruud.
Ruud secured his spot in the semifinals with victories over Taylor Fritz and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Rafael Nadal was his opponent in his final round-robin match, which he lost. He has to defeat Andrey Rublev in order to get to the championship round. Initially in the opening set, Rublev played pretty well, but he was unable to keep up with Ruud, who ripped off five straight games to win the set. Into the second set, the Norwegian kept riding the momentum wave. He took a 4-0 lead by twice breaking his opponent’s serve. When the score was 5-2, Ruud stepped up to serve the match, but Rublev managed to hold off the challenge by winning the following few games. The 24-year-old was able to finish the match 6-2, 6-4 on his second attempt, though, and advance to his first final in this venue.
On the other hand, for the duration of the group stage, Djokovic won all three of his matches against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, and Daniil Medvedev.
