With decisive 16-10 victory over Van Gerwen, who followed defending champion Gerwyn Price in exiting the tournament at the quarterfinal stage, Humphries earned spot in his second televised semi-final. As the three-time World Champion continued to show signs of weakness, Humphries, who was frequently threatening enormous three-figure combinations, took advantage and moved a leg away from victory at 15-10. Van Gerwen managed to keep his slim hopes alive with a 104 skin-saver, but this was only a short-lived respite as Humphries sunk tops to win the match after Van Gerwen had missed the same mark to stay alive.
Humphries will now compete in Sunday night’s championship match against former UK Open champion Aspinall after Aspinall defeated Alan Soutar to get to his first Grand Slam semifinal. Aspinall lost to Soutar in their Group E matchup last weekend, but the former Premier League runner-up made up for it in a wild game to secure a 16-12 victory. The 2012 champion Van Barneveld will face the World Championship runner-up Michael Smith in Sunday’s opening match, and Aspinall and Humphries will square off in the second semi-final of the day. In 2022, the Grand Slam of Darts champion will take home £150,000 in prize money, while the loser will take home £70,000. Of the £650,000 in net prizes, each competitor will get minimum of $5,000. The prize fund this year is larger than the fund from the previous year, which was £550,000. Alan Soutar and Michael van Gerwen will each win £25,000 after falling in the quarterfinal round.
