He is now a full-time member of NITI Aayog, thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approval. Tuesday, the Cabinet Secretariat sent out a notice to that effect.

Arvind Virmani is an Indian economist who was put in charge of India’s interests at the International Monetary Fund in 2009. Before that, he was the Chief Economic Advisor for the Indian government.
The Doon School was where Virmani went. He got a degree in Physics from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. He then studied engineering at the California Institute of Technology. Finally, he got a PhD in economics from Harvard University.
He has been an advisor to the Indian government at the highest levels, such as as the principal advisor to the Planning Commission and the chief economic adviser to the Ministry of Finance. Virmani wrote the Economic Survey of India when he was the Chief Economic Advisor to the Indian government (2008-2009).

He was named India’s representative to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2009. This position lasts for three years and is often seen as a reward for bureaucrats who are about to retire. He wrote several articles about macroeconomics, growth and finance, international trade and tariffs, and international relations.
His books include The Sudoku of India’s Growth, From Uni-polar to Tri-polar World: The Multi-Polar Transition Paradox, and Propelling India from Socialist Stagnation to Global Power. He was India’s ambassador to the IMF, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan while he worked there. Virmani has also been the main advisor for the Planning Commission.

The NITI Aayog is the top public policy think tank for the Government of India. It is also the main agency in charge of boosting economic growth and promoting cooperative federalism by involving State Governments of India in the process of making economic policy from the bottom up.
