Prediction
On Thursday, the 2022 ATP Finals group stage will include a match between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz.
Rafael Nadal was the opponent for Auger-Aliassime in a match that he had to win after losing to Casper Ruud in the opening match of the round-robin stage. Even in the opening game of the match, he was under pressure, but he was able to hold serve by saving a few break points. In order to make it 4-3, the Canadian fought off a few more break points in the seventh game.
In the subsequent game, Nadal held a 40-0 serve advantage, but Auger-Aliassime was able to break it and take the lead, 5-3. Then, with ease, he finished off the set and carried on in the following set. In essence, Auger-Aliassime won the game because of an early break that put him up 3-1. In the end, the 22-year-old won 6-3, 6-4, and Nadal was unable to mount a comeback.
On the other hand, Taylor Fritz defeated Rafael Nadal in straight sets to make a successful ATP Finals debut. In his second group tie, he faced off against Ruud. The American fell behind 3-0 after giving up an early break in the first set and was unable to catch up, ultimately dropping the opening game. In the second set, Fritz had three break point opportunities, but he failed to convert any of them. At 5-4, with Ruud serving, the 25-year-old recognised an opportunity and broke his opponent’s serve, winning the set.
Both players refused to give any ground during the decisive set, which was hotly played. Fritz saved a few match points to tie the score at 6-6 despite Ruud having a 5-1 lead in the subsequent tie-break. Unfortunately, the American’s fightback quickly ended as he lost 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.
Both players can play first-strike tennis thanks to their powerful serves and complementary groundstrokes. They will be feeling the pressure as well because a semifinal appearance in their first ATP Finals is a big deal. Overall, Auger-Aliassime has been performing better lately, giving him the advantage over Fritz.
