After winning their respective second-round matches, Magnus Carlsen and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, have taken commanding lead in 2022 Tour Finals. On Wednesday, Carlsen defeated Indian youngster Arjun Erigaisi in just three games to end his day early in San Francisco. During this clash, Carlsen had some difficulties along the way, but now he has two straight victories and the maximum six points. Duda also triumphed against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov by score of 2.5-0.5 and joined Carlsen at top with 6/6 points.

Elsewhere, the contest between Dutch ace Anish Giri and Indian superstar Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa was a thrilling one. Pragg needed to rebound after losing yesterday, so he blasted his way to two swift victories over Giri. However, Giri launched a spectacular comeback to draw the match at 2-2 and force blitz tiebreaks when he needed to win twice in a row. Wesley So lost to Vietnam’s Liem Quang Le by score of 1.5-2.5, severely hurting his prospects of winning the competition.

On Thursday’s Round 3 matches at 2022 Tour Finals, Wesley So will face Indian prodigy Arjun Erigaisi and Duda will face Giri. Meanwhile, Carlsen will face-off against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Liem Le will play Pragg, who will be eager to win his first match.

Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Leg 9 – Tour Finals 2022 Prize Money Pool Distribution

The winner of each four-game tie will get a prize of $7,500, but if a tiebreaker is required, the winner will receive $5,000 instead of the loser’s $2,500. As a result, the 2022 Tour Finals will have a $210,000 total prize pool, with $52,500 going to the player who wins all seven rounds. Duda and Magnus Carlsen have both received the maximum $15,000 in prize money so already.
