Prediction
On Wednesday, the 2022 ATP Finals’ group stage will feature a match between Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, and world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Tsitsipas faced Novak Djokovic in his first round-robin match, and he lost serve early on, falling behind 1-0 in the first set. After that, he was unable to disrupt his opponent’s serve in any way, and he ended up dropping the set. The Greek upped his game in the second set, but it was still difficult for him to exhaust the Serb. The set entered a tie-break because both players maintained their serve all the way through. Greek lost the match 6-4, 7-6 because Djokovic had a 5-1 lead and he was unable to overturn it.
On the other hand, Medvedev faced Andrey Rublev in the first game of his group. As he tried to win the set, he broke his opponent’s serve to tie the game after losing an early break and falling behind 3-1. To maintain serve and force a tie-break, the former World No. 1 then clung to a few set points. In the tie-break, Rublev quickly took a 6-2 lead, but Medvedev persisted and overcame the deficit to take the opening set.
After failing to maintain momentum into the second set, the former US Open champion lost the first set after dropping serve twice. In the third set, the pair matched one another quite evenly thanks to strong serve defence. Rublev stormed out to a 6-3 lead as the set entered the tie-break. After watching over off the first four match points, Medvedev finally disappeared on the fifth one, losing 6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-6. (7).
Medvedev coughed up 11 double faults in their previous match, which they lost in three sets, in Cincinnati. Despite the Russian’s poor serving, Tsitsipas performed well in that match. Both teams must win handily to have a chance of advancing to the semifinals after dropping their first group match. Currently, Medvedev’s game has less gaps than Tsitsipas’, giving him the advantage to prevail.
