Predictionย
Brandon Nakashima and Jack Draper will face off against each other at the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals on Saturday.
Despite a rocky beginning against Matteo Arnaldi, Brandon Nakashima finished first in his group. The American defeated Francesco Passaro and Jiri Lehecka without losing a set after defeating his opponent in five sets. After falling to Dominic Stricker in three sets, Jack Draper was doomed from the start. Though it was essentially a shootout to determine who would move on, the British player rose to the occasion and played himself into shape, particularly in the easy victory over Lorenzo Musetti.
Nakashima, the 49th-ranked player in the world, lost in straight sets to Lehecka and Passaro to advance to the Next Gen ATP Finals semifinals after dropping two sets to Matteo Arnaldi in his tournament debut. 3-0. The 21-year-old Nakashima fell to fellow American Sebastian Korda in five sets at this level of the competition last year, but he came back to Milan a far more seasoned player this time around with 30 wins on the tour and his first ATP championship won at the San Diego Open.
On the other hand, on his Next Gen ATP Finals debut on Tuesday, World Number 41 Jack Draper was defeated by Dominic Stricker, but the 20-year-old has since significantly improved. On Wednesday, he defeated Chun-hsin Tseng in four sets, and on Thursday, he upset an obviously worn-out Lorenzo Musetti to unseat the hometown favourite and advance to the round of four. From early this year’s consistent Challenger success to a career-best run to the quarterfinals of the Canada Masters in August, Draper has had a fantastic debut season on the tour.
The problem with Nakashima is that, despite being incredibly solid and consistently giving it his all on the court, he is unable to match the incredible level that Draper can achieve when he is performing well. The American wasn’t (and still isn’t) the top contender for the title, but he was probably going to make it to the semifinals. Since Nakashima has a perfect record in Milan thus far, picking him to win at least two sets seems like the best course of action to avoid selecting a winner in this difficult call.
