Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s “bad night” robbed them their winning streak, perfect road record, and the top spot in the Spanish league. Madrid’s 3-2 loss at Rayo Vallecano on Monday ended its six-match winning streak on the road and marked the team’s first league loss. Madrid was far from its best. Carlo Ancelotti’s club is now two points behind Barcelona as a result of the defeat. After losing to Leipzig in the Champions League group stage last month, it was only Madrid’s second loss across all competitions. This season, Madrid has won 15 of its first 19 games, with three ties.
The Champions League round of 16 will feature Madrid again vs Liverpool. It has an eight-point advantage over Atlético Madrid in the Spanish league’s third spot. Both competitions feature Madrid as the defending champion. In its last 21 games against the local rival, Rayo has just twice defeated Madrid, with the majority of the game being played better by Rayo. A second occurred in 2019.
Santi Comesaa’s strike from inside the box gave the home team the lead five minutes into the game at Vallecas Stadium. With headers from Éder Milito in the 41st minute and a penalty kick by Luka Modric in the 37th minute, Madrid came back. In the 44th minute, Rayo’s lvaro Garca equalised, and in the 67th minute, Luis Trejo scored on a penalty shot after VAR showed Dani Carvajal had handled the ball inside the box. Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid initially stopped Trejo’s penalty attempt, but VAR again stepped in and the shot was retaken because Courtois appeared to have stepped off the line and Carvajal had already entered the area before Trejo’s attempt.
Rayo has won the last two games to extend its winning streak to five straight league games. It jumped up to eighth.
