Following the news, Dave Butz’s former teammate, and close friend Joe Theismann, who was a star QB expressed his grief.

The organization confirmed the news on Friday, November 4. Dave Butz played for the Washington Commanders as their star defensive tackle for over a decade from 1975 to 1988. No cause of death is yet given but its envisaged to be due to ailing health.

He was married to Tanja and his two children are Finley and Emily with his net worth at $5 million.

The Washington Commanders shared their sorrow in a statement:

“We’re heartbroken over the loss of Washington Legend Dave Butz…. a 2x Super Bowl champion and member of our Ring of Fame and 90 Greatest list.”

Joe Theismann, who was a close friend of  Dave also shared his anguish over Dave’s death. The two legends played together in D.C. for a total of 9 seasons. During that time, they also managed to win the Super Bowl XVII together back in 1983. Joe stated:

Dave Butz Brief Bio

David Butz was born on June 23, 1950 in La Fayette, Alabama, United States. He obtained his education from Maine South High School and later from Purdue University where he played college football for the Purdue Boilermakers.

He started off his professional football career in the NFL as a defensive tackle for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973. Later in 1975, he joined the Washington  Commanders who were known as the Washington Redskins back then. There he played until 1988.

Dave stood at an impressive height of 2.03 m or 6 feet 8 inches. Following an impressive career, Dave was inducted into the hall of fame on December 9, 2014.

Dave Butz Career Highlights And Achievements

While playing college football for Purdue, he was a 1972 finalist for the Lombardi Award. When Dave started out his career with the then-St. Louis Cardinals, as the 5th overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft.

He played most of his 16-year NFL career with the Washington Commanders with whom he won 2 Super Bowls.

He was famously known for checking himself out of the hospital to play against the New York Jets in 1987. Once he made a game-saving tackle during the game, Butz proceeded to check himself back into the hospital.

Dave Butz ranks third for the all-time most sacks (59.5) for the Washington Commanders. The organization also named him as one of their 70 greatest players.
