World number two Daniil who is competing in his debut games had made it into the round of 16 after defeating India’s Sumit Nagal.  He took on Italian Fabio Fognini on Wednesday at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, a clash which required him to dive deep into his repertoire to prevail.

Lasting two hours and 36 minutes, the marathon affair brought about the best of Daniil as he saved 7 of the 8 break points he faced. However, his 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win was far from a pleasant affair with Daniil seen having a fracas with the umpire as his energy levels dwindled.
