Prediction
On Friday, the world No. 22 Roberto Bautista Agut will face the three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Swiss Indoors.
After defeating Laslo Djere in straight sets, Bautista Agut went on to face former World No. 1 Andy Murray in the second round. The Spaniard lost an early break and fell behind 2-1 in the first set before soon catching up. He broke serve in the ninth game to take a 5-3 advantage. Bautista Agut rejected a few break points before serving the last point of the set to grab the lead. He continued his winning streak into the second set, which he won 2-0. Despite having a chance to resume serving, Murray’s break attempts failed. The Spaniard took the final three games in a row to win the match 6-3, 6-2. Bautista Agut, who has a 3-3 record so far in this round, has advanced to his sixth quarterfinal of the year.
On the other hand, Wawrinka defeated Casper Ruud, the third-ranked player in the world, in the opening round in straight sets. He competed against Brandon Nakashima in round two. The Swiss took the lead 5-4 after securing a serve break in the ninth game of the fiercely contested first set. He finished serving the set to win the next game.
Nakashima had three break chances in the sixth game of the second set but didn’t take advantage of any of them. Instead, in the next game, Wawrinka was successful in breaking his serve, and with a hold of service, he immediately took the lead at 5-3. The American took control of the following four games to take the set and set up a decider.
Both players had excellent serves in the last set, but Nakashima’s break in the ninth game was the first to let him down. With a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory, Wawrinka completed the match to advance to his second quarterfinal of the year.
Murray was defeated by Bautista Agut, the winner of the previous round, after a really impressive effort. He had eight break points and saved seven of them while making 18 winners and 11 unforced errors. Wawrinka was on course to beat Nakashima in just two sets, but he dropped a set due to a subpar serve. However, he eventually bounced back and won.
The Spaniard’s consistency pays back for his lack of a powerful shotmaker like Wawrinka. After his challenging three-set victory, the three-time Major champion should be able to prevail, but if not, Bautista Agut will undoubtedly prevail.
