After winning the junior Wimbledon championships this year, Sumit Nagal has kept his stocks on the rise. Sumit Nagal sneaked into India’s Tokyo Olympics contingent for Tennis as the 144th ranked player globally. Nagal’s debut at the Olympics saw him beat Denis Istomin in straight sets to progress into the next round.

Sumit Nagal took birth to an English teacher named Suresh and Krishna Devi at a small district of Jhajjar in Haryana. The 17-year old started playing the sport aged eight and joined the Mahesh Bhupati’s Tennis Academy two years later.

Nagal entered the academy as part of the Mahesh Bhupathi’s Apollo Tyres Mission 2018 programme. However, the youngster moved to Toronto for training under coach Bobby Mahal as the programme shut down. From his Instagram handle, Nagal seems an avid traveller, fitness enthusiast, and loves swimming. His net worth is a touch above $2 million.

Sumit Nagal’s early career, achievements, awards and rising through the ranking

Sumit Nagal made an impact straight away by winning the Wimbledon boys’ doubles title in 2015 alongside the Vietnamese Ly Hoang Nam. The pair defeated Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan in the decider by straight sets.

In the process, the Haryana-born athlete became the sixth Indian to lift the junior grand slam trophy. The following year, Sumit debuted in the Davis Cup in New Delhi and captured his maiden ATP Challenger title in 2017.

Sumit Nagal pulled off a heist by beating Blaz Kavcic in the quarter-finals, followed by Yiki Bhambri in the semi-finals. The decider saw the youngster defeat United Kingdom’s Jay Clarke in straight sets.

First appearance at the grand slam for Sumit Nagal

The 17-year old made a massive leap in 2019 at the US Open, qualifying to make his debut at the grand slam. Though Sumit Nagal lost his first-round fixture against Roger Federer, he took the match to the final set.

Nagal could not defend his ATP Challenger crown, losing in the final to Tallon Griekspoor; however, he won it in the Buenos Aires Challenger. The teenage prodigy clinched his second challenger title and first on the Clay surface by defeating local player Facundo Bagnis in the decider.

In 2020, Nagal’s first majors victory came by beating Bradley Klahn and became the first Indian since Somdev Devvarman to emerge victorious in the main draw of a grand slam. However, Dominic Thiem ended his run in the second round.

Maiden Junior Wimbledon singles title in 2021

Sumit Nagal beat the American Victor Lilov 7-5 and 6-3 to lift the boys singles’ titles in Wimbledon. Though the 17-year old’s win in the opening set came by hard and eventually won 7-5, Nagal made quick work of Lilov in the second.

The youngster sealed his berth in the decider by defeating France’s Gueymard Wayenburg 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2. And he made an impression straight away by defeating Denis Istomin, scoring yet another significant win of his career.

Though Istomin had not won a grand slam tournament, he has beaten the likes of Novak Djokovic, Sam Querrey, and Marin Cilic. Nagal did not give an easy win to Istomin in the second set either, taking it to the tiebreak and falling 6-7(6). The 17-year old clinched the last set as well by the same margin 6-4.

Sumit Nagal faces a stern test in Daniil Medvedev in the second round, the world number two and Australian Open finalists. It shouldn’t come as a surprise if the 17-year old suffers a mauling at the hands of the Russian. However, it would be interesting to see him take Medvedev to the breaking point.
