China’s Yang Qian Wins First Gold Medal At The Tokyo Olympics

Yang Qian, Chinese shooter had won the first gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics during the Women’s 10m air rifle,

Indian shooters like Apurvi Chandela and Elavanil Valarivan didn’t have a successful outing in their respective matches on Saturday. Russian shooter Anastasiia Galashina won the silver and Swiss shooter Nina Christen won the bronze medal respectively.

She was on the number sixth position during the qualification round with 628.7 points and went on to score 251.8 points in the finals and has beaten Russia’s Anastasiia’s by 251.1 points and opened the account for China’s medals.

Yang was trailing behind by 0.1 point before the two final shots and it was observed that the gap was widened by a margin of 10.7 point and her opponent scored 10.8 points.

Ultimately, it was the last shot that would define who the winner is, so Anastasiia had shot 8.9 to give away the Olympic title to Yang, whose score was 9.8.

Norway’s Jeanette Hegg had also qualified to the finals and is also leading the qualification table with 632.9 points, in the Qualification Olympic round.

Park Heemoon, South Korean shooter (631.7) points and Mary Tucker, American shooter (631.4) points secured second and third position respectively. Other shooters who have qualified for the eight shooters finals are South Korea’s Eunji Kwon, France’s Oceanne Muller (630.7), China’s Yang Qian (628.7), Switxerland’s Nina Christen (628.5), and Russia’a Anastasiia Galashina  (628.5).

How did the Indian shooters perform?

India’s Elavanil  and Apurvi couldn’t reach to the finals as they lost in the qualification round itself.

The World No.1 shooter, Elavanil was not in her prime form today and could only score 626.5 points our of 654 and 60 shots were still remaining in the qualifying round. She got the 16th position and was competing in a field consisting of 50 competitors.

Her best score in the qualifying round was between the range of 632-633, but was not in her prime form and rhythm on Saturday to see India end up with a dejecting day in the sport.
