Haney deservedly received a sizable payday; according to reports, the Undisputed Lightweight Champion was promised a basic salary of $7 million and may earn up to $9.2 million overall. On the other hand, George Kambosos Jr. is said to have a base salary of $6 million and a maximum earning potential of $7.9 million. This payout is complete opposite of what was given out during first fight between Haney and Kambasos, where Haney received only $2.8 million total payout.
Much-anticipated rematch between Devin Haney and George Kambosos was scheduled on 15th October at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. During this event, Haney vs Kambasos ring-walks began at 10:30 PM ET (3:30 AM BST). Undisputed title match between Haney and Kambasos was a 12-round lightweight contest with WBC, WBO, IBF, & WBA title at stake. Devin Haney vs George Kambosos Match Events & How it Unfolded?
Boxing from the red corner, Kambosos got off to a good start, putting his opponent on the ropes with a barrage of blows just as the bell rang to close the first round. However, Haney answered effectively in the second round as he began to gain the upper hand. During the third round, Haney landed a few solid blows and was more at ease both on offence & defense. Further, Haney was adept at controlling his distance as Kambosos Jr. effectively employed his left jab.
Despite Kambosos hitting some solid body blows in the fifth round, Haney was able to increase his lead and later in seventh round, after opening up a gash beneath the Australian’s left eye, Haney repeatedly jabbed Kambosos. In the eighth round, he attacked the titleholder with vigor and it turned out to be his strongest sequence since the closing moments of the first round, but by that point, only a knockout would be sufficient to give him the victory in the 12-round bout.
Sensing a potential change in momentum, the Rod Laver Arena fans rallied behind the Australian, who was able to gash open the right side of Haney’s face. However, Haney reaffirmed his superiority and used his right hand to demonstrate the difference. Haney was declared the winner with a score of 118-109 from one judge and 118-110 from the other two judges.
