Prediction
On Monday, October 10, the 2022 Gijon Open’s opening round will feature World Number 46 Andy Murray of Great Britain taking on Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina of Spain, the number six seed and World No. 31.
In the ATP rankings, Murray reclaimed the top 50 after a few strong early-season showings. He lost against Aslan Karatsev and Matteo Berrettini, respectively, in the finals of the Sydney International and the BOSS Open in Stuttgart.
After defeating Francisco Cerundolo, the 24th seed, and Emilio Nava, Murray advanced to the third round of the US Open. But Berrettini eventually beat him in four sets and went on to the quarterfinals. The former World No. 1 then competed for Team Europe in the Laver Cup, where he dropped his lone singles match to Alex de Minaur.
Davidovich Fokina’s triumph over Taylor Fritz and Novak Djokovic to advance to the Monte-Carlo Masters final stands out as his biggest success this season. The Spaniard played well at the US Open, defeating Yoshihito Nishioka, Marton Fucsovics, and Daniel Galan to go to the Round of 16. He had never before made it past the third round of a Major on a hard court. Finally, he was defeated by Berrettini. Davidovich Fokina then participated in the Astana Open but was defeated by Pavel Kotov in the opening round.
Murray can attack very quickly and is a solid defender. Due to recent pace loss, the 35-year-old is now focusing on making the fewest errors possible. He still has the ability to use his serve to score a few free points.
It’s hard to say who will prevail in this conflict of opposing viewpoints. Murray’s history, however, may be what finally tips him over the brink.
