These two players have faced each other four times in the past, and given the nature of the competition, both players have taken four victories. The ATP Next Gen Finals, an exhibition game in Abu Dhabi, and three Challenger circuit matches are not included in this.
These players last met on indoor hard courts in Madrid earlier this year, where Tsitsipas prevailed in three games. Rublev has won both of their previous meetings between them.
Prediction
On Saturday, October 8, the semifinal of the 2022 Astana Open will feature a match between the third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and the fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev.
Tsitsipas was the favourite going into his quarterfinal matchup with Hubert Hurkacz, but considering his recent play, a win for him wasn’t a lock. Because of this, he should have the kind of boost he needs to face a player of Rublev’s energy in this semifinal after defeating his Polish opponent in straight sets, albeit with some difficulty.
After saving five set points in the first set, the Greek number one required an hour and 43 minutes to defeat Hurkacz 7-6 (8), 6-3. His clinical nature led him to convert the first opportunity he had before securing the lone break-point of the second set and advancing quickly. Tsitsipas will have the upper hand even against Rublev if he keeps up his fighting spirit.
Few would have predicted the kind of demolition job Rublev delivered, while few would have predicted Adrian Mannarino would put up much of a fight against him either. After two prior different victories in the competition for Rublev, his 6-1, 6-2 thrashing of Mannarino took place after just 57 minutes on the court.
Throughout the three rounds, Rublev has only lost 15 games in total, and in his most recent encounter, he broke Mannarino four times out of five opportunities. The world number nine only once encountered a break-point, and he quickly saved it. The only issue Rublev would have if he faced Tsitsipas is that he hasn’t yet been put to the test in the competition, making the Greek’s challenge that much greater. Here, Tsitsipas is the slight favourite, thus backing him to defeat Rublev in a competitive encounter won’t be a bad option.
