Prediction
On Friday in the Astana Open quarterfinals, fourth seed Novak Djokovic will play Karen Khachanov.
Defeating Marin Cilic in the Tel Aviv Open final last week, Djokovic captured his third championship of the year and became the first player to win matches on all three surfaces.
At the Astana Open, the Serb’s opponent in the opening round was Cristian Garin. In order to face Botic van de Zandschulp in the Round of 16, he destroyed the Chilean 6-1, 6-1. In the sixth game of the first set, Djokovic made the game-changing break to win it 6-3. He easily won the second set, 6-1, to guarantee his spot in the quarterfinals.
Karen Khachanov competed in the Astana Open for the first time after reaching his first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open. As the ATP 500 action got underway, Maxime Cressy was defeated by the Russian 6-4, 7-6. (3). He lost the opening set 6-2 in his second-round match against Marin Cilic. To win the second set 6-3 and force a decider, Khachanov rallied and broke Cilic once again. When he had a 3-1 lead in the fourth set, the 26-year-old player survived break points in each of his final two service games. Assuring his spot in the Astana Open semifinals, Khachanov eventually won the match 6-3.
In his earlier match against Djokovic, Khachanov had to put in a lot of effort to prevail. The Serbian, who seems to be in fantastic form, is clearly the overwhelming favourite going into this match. Djokovic prefers playing from the baseline and is methodical when building his points. He will have an advantage over the strong Khachanov thanks to his stronger defensive skills and return game.
If the Russian is not performing at his peak during his service games, the former World No. 1 will easily defeat him. Considering how well-conditioned he seems to be, Djokovic will most likely easily advance to the semifinals.
