Prediction
In the quarterfinal of the 2022 Tel Aviv Open on Friday, World No. 35 and Number Four seed Maxime Cressy of the United States will face World No. 68 Constant Lestienne of France.
Since being forced to withdraw from his match against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary at the US Open’s first round due to injury, Cressy had not participated in a competitive match. But after receiving a first-round bye in Tel Aviv, he eased his way back into competition with a convincing win against fellow countryman and world number 44 Sebastian Korda. Cressy made the first move with an early break, then turned back three break points on his own to win the opening set.
In the first game of the second set, Korda had three break points saved; however, when another one presented itself eight games later, he was not as fortunate. With no need for a second invitation, Cressy served for the match and finished it with a love game to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, Lestienne is a classic example of a late bloomer because it took him until he was past 30 years old before he attained his highest singles ranking. This is largely due to his performance on the Challenger tour, where he has competed in five finals this year and won three of them. Last week in San Diego, he made history by reaching his first-ever ATP quarterfinal; this week, he accomplished the same feat in Israel.
Lestienne started his week off with a French-only match against fellow countryman Adrian Mannarino, which he won in straight sets. He then faced off against Finn Emil Ruusuvouri, the world’s number 54, in the second round on Thursday.
Lestienne’s match did not get off to a good start as he was broken in the first game and was unable to recover despite having breakback opportunities in the following game. He did succeed in breaking back later in the second set, though, and finished the comeback with another break to win the first set. Up to the sixth game of the second set, Ruusuvouri’s serve was held until the end. With no further issues, Lestienne was able to end the game at that point.
Since Cressy is ranked higher than the other player, he will enter the match as a slight favourite and has more senior tour experience, it is likely that he will advance to the final four.
