With effect from the date of his assumption of responsibility, 61-year-old Chauhan will also serve as secretary for the Department of Military Affairs, according to the defense ministry. The official statement from the defense ministry said,
“The government has decided to appoint Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who shall also function as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs with effect from the date of his assumption of charge and until further orders.”

Who Is Lt Gen Anil Chauhan?
Lt Gen Anil Chauhan (retd) is the former coveted commander of the Indian army. He has been in the news because he has recently been appointed as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff.
His birth took place in Kolkata on May 18, 1961.
He received his education at the Kendriya Vidyalaya Fort William in Kolkata. Following that, he did his graduation from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
He is married to an artist named Anupama Chauhan and the couple has a daughter named Pragya Chauhan.
He’s 61 years old right now. Originally his family hails from Uttarakhand and Lt Gen Anil Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
His Career
In 1981, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles. Throughout his career, he has held a number of command, staff, and teaching positions. He has also participated in counter-insurgency operations in Northeast India and Jammu & Kashmir.
He additionally worked for a UN mission in Angola. He was chosen to succeed Manoj Mukund Naravane as GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, in July 2019 because on August 31, 2019, Naravane is going to become Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS).
He retired on May 31, 2021. However, he kept working on strategic and national security issues even after leaving the Army.
Due to his excellent and distinguished service in the Indian Army, Chauhan has received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
On September 28, 2022, he was chosen to serve as the second Chief of Defence Staff.
