Prediction
In the 2022 Moselle Open quarterfinal round, reigning champion Hubert Hurkacz will face Arthur Rinderknech.
Hurkacz began his title defence against Dominic Thiem, the winner of the 2020 US Open, after receiving a bye in the first round. In the very first game of the match, he turned away a few break points before holding serve. Over the following games, both players did a good job of defending their serves. After this, Hurkacz won 6-3, 6-4, and Thiem was unable to regain control of the match. He has a 4-2 record so far in quarterfinals, which is his eighth this year.
On the other hand, with a difficult three-set victory over Jaume Munar in the first round of the Moselle Open, Arthur Rinderknech got his season started. In the second round, he faced off against Nikoloz Basilashvili, the fifth seed.
In the second set, Rinderkench possessed a break point to go up 4-3, but Basilashivili was able to save it. The Frenchman won the following two games to win the match 7-6 (11), 6-3, and this proved to be too expensive for him. He has now advanced to his third season quarterfinal.
Hurkacz had a decent match against Thiem in the previous round, earning 82% of his first serve points and hitting 12 aces. Although the defending champion definitely has an advantage over him in this area, Rinderknech’s serving statistics in the second round were still fairly good.
Long-lasting duels won’t help Rinderknech because Hurkacz is simply too strong from the start. The indoor courts play to the Pole’s strengths, so he will need to develop effective counter strategies.
Rinderknech had some trouble with Hurkacz’s serve when they had faced off in Miami earlier this year. Only one break point opportunity was created by him, and he was unable to take advantage of it. In the first set, the Frenchman was able to push the 25-year-old to a tiebreak, but the second set was largely one-sided.
Particularly when it comes to first serves, Hurkacz’s serving performance over the past several months has been out of the ordinary. History is likely to repeat itself unless Rinderknech is able to improve on his comeback strategy. Hurkacz should win and continue his title defence.
