2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Leg 7 – Julius Baer Generation Cup Day 4 Results, Quarterfinal Schedule, & Latest Standings

The Julius Baer Generation Cup’s final day was a real nail-biter, but not when it came to the competition for first place. Magnus Carlsen grasped first rank in prelims with one round to spare after defeating Radek Wojtaszek and Christopher Yoo. Carlsen’s victory over Vincent Keymer in the last round also ensured that, despite awarding Hans Niemann three points, he had amassed a record-breaking 34/45 points for the 2022 Tour.

Jan-Krzysztof Duda fell to Hans Niemann with little to no chance and was quite disappointed because, up until his defeat to David Navara in the semifinals, he appeared to be on track to advance. In the decisive round, Navara failed to score a win against Boris Gelfand, and a draw wasn’t good enough to make him through to the quarterfinal.

The four players who were tied on 18 points engaged in the fiercest competition, and no less than three of them emerged victorious. One of them was 15-year-old Christopher Yoo, who won with the black pieces against the hot Liem Le to defeat Adhiban after losing to Magnus in the opening game of the day to regain his qualification slot.
