In response to Shankar’s assertion that the entire higher judiciary is “riddled with corruption” during an interview with a Tamil station on YouTube, a two-judge panel made up of Justice GR Swaminathan and Justice B Pugalenthi issued the orders.
The court further ordered the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to guarantee that the offending sections of the “offending interviews” be erased in addition to giving Shankar a six-month sentence of simple imprisonment in the Madurai Central Prison.
Since then, he has become a hot topic of conversation with many people debating whether his arrest is justified or not. He has become the talk of the town and right now, many people are trying to find out more about him. So, here’s what we know about him:
Who Is Youtuber Savukku Shankar?
Savukku Shankar is a famous Youtuber, blogger, and content creator and Hindu by religion. He has been in the news because he was sentenced to six months of simple jail in a suo moto contempt case for his comments against the higher court.
He was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India into an ethnic Tamil family. He is in his 40s and has a height of 5 feet 7 inches. His parents and wife’s name is not known.
He attended Sir M. CT. Muthiah Chettiar Boys Higher Secondary School.
His Career
He started his career as a lower division clerk in the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. Later, he started doing investigative journalism and started writing blogs.
He initially made headlines between 2008 and 2010 when a series of articles outlining different corrupt dealings tied to the ruling DMK and cops affiliated to the ruling party were released by an anonymous blog post. It was later found that he wrote those blogs.
Later, he was suspended from his job. After disappearing for a while, he reappeared as an ardent opponent of the Edapadi Palanisamy-led ADMK administration. Additionally, he repositioned himself as an ideological companion of the Dravidian-Periyarist movement and rose to prominence in a number of media sources.
Now, he has become a fierce opponent of the DMK administration in recent months, particularly focusing on the party’s putative heir Udayanidhi Stalin and a number of important ministers.
Shankar recently made his political aspirations known. According to some political analysts, the high court decision would make him seem to the public as a “courageous crusader,” opening the door for his entry into politics.
However, a senior writer for a Tamil political weekly asserted that the political elite and police are well aware of several “sordid details” about him and that his sole usefulness to the system is acting as a “freelance mercenary.”
