Prediction

2014 runner-up at Wimbledon Eugenie Bouchard will compete in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Chennai Open against Nadia Podoroska, who reached the semifinals of the 2020 French Open.

Bouchard met home favourite Karman Kaur Thandi in the second round after sweeping Joanne Zuger in straight sets. The Canadian broke her opponent’s serve twice in the opening set to establish a 4-0 advantage. After a few more games, she had a set point on Thandi’s serve at 5-2, but she failed to capitalise on it. The 28-year-old nonetheless served to end the set in the second game.

Thandi jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the second set and even served to win. She had several set points as well, but Bouchard came back to square the game. After winning the tie-break, the Canadian went on to win the fourth set and the match, 6-2, 7-6. (2).

Since making her comeback last month, Bouchard has now made it to the quarterfinals just once.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Nadia Podoroska easily ousted qualifier Kyoka Okamura to commence her career in Chennai. She faced fourth-seeded Tatjana Maria, a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2022, in the second round. In the first set, Podoroska had a rough start, falling behind 5-0. In an attempt to stage a comeback, she won three straight games, but Maria ended it by serving out the set on her second attempt. The two players were evenly matched as the second set started, but the Argentine quickly improved and went on a run of four straight games to take the set.

Both players had break point opportunities in the deciding set, but neither capitalised on them. In the subsequent tie-break, Maria held a 5-1 advantage, and it seemed like the German would win with ease. Podoroska, though, staged yet another comeback and changed the course of events to triumph 3-6, 6-2, 7-6. (6).

Both players have missed significant amounts of time due to injuries during the past year. Bouchard missed more than 12 months of competition, compared to Podoroska’s 10 missed months. With this chance, they have a great chance to gain some much-needed points and climb the standings.

After the initial round, Maria put Podoroska to the test. Despite her incredible comeback against the German, she will need to perform even better against the Canadian in the quarterfinals. She made six double faults, and her forehand occasionally went wrong. The Canadian will need to watch out for that, though, as that is where the majority of the Argentine’s 47 victories came from.

Bouchard also struggled against Thandi in the second round, but she was able to bounce back. Since she has only participated in three events this year, she has not yet developed a routine. The intense heat and humidity of Chennai would also put a strain on the player’s physical condition.

Podoroska began the tour a little earlier than Bouchard, so she ought to have the upper hand when it counts.
