After the initial morning walk returning back to home, Yashpal Sharma experienced a cardiac arrest as he slumped to the ground at around 7.30 am today.

The Right-hander has appeared for India In 37 Tests and 42 ODIs he donned India’s cap and was a pivotal member of the Middle Order during 1979-83.
For a few years he also served as a national selector and in 2008 was reappointed to the panel. He was one of the Indian Team selectors when India won the 2011 World Cup on home turf after he was part of the World Cup-winning squad in 1983.

The veteran Punjabi batsman debuted against England in 1979. Yashpal tallied 1606, averaging over 33, with two hundred years and nine fifties. In 1978, he earned his maiden ODI International debut against Pakistan and played several crucial innings strengthening the middle-order for India.
Yashpal Sharma subsequently appeared in 42 One-Day International (ODI) games for Indian Team, scoring 883 runs which included four fifties as well.

He played a key role in India’s World Cup victory in 1983, emerging as the leading run-scorer versus England in the semi-finals. In 1983, his exploits for India’s maiden World Cup victory were recognized best globally.
In addition, Yashpal Sharma amassed 240 with a blasting average of 34.28 in the tournament, as he acquired the second leading run-scorer position for Team India, just behind his captain Kapil Dev.
Yashpal Sharma struck 89 runs (of 120 balls) strengthening Team India’s cruise in ease with a 34-run victory against the menacing West Indies in their very first game of the World Cup in Manchester. The knock turned out as a motivator for the team to lift their maiden World Cup in 1983.
Later in the career, Yashpal Sharma was selected as the national selector in 2005, where he maintained his position for a few years until being re-elected in 2008.
