Wimbledon 2021: Indian-Origin Tennis Player Samir Banerjee Lifts The Boys’ Singles’ Title

Samir Banerjee, the Indian-Origin American Tennis player, created history by beating Victor Lilov to win the boys’ singles title in Wimbledon 2021 junior finals

Indian-Origin American Tennis player Samir Banerjee created a proud moment for India in the junior boys’ Wimbledon final. The Number one court saw Samir Banerjee oust American Victor Lilov 7-5 and 6-3 to lift the boys’ singles’ title. Banerjee, a resident of New Jersey, started playing Tennis professionally as recently as last year.

“Remember the name – Samir Banerjee. The American wins his first junior Grand Slam singles title by beating Victor Lilov in the boys’ singles final,” Wimbledon’s official Twitter handle posted. The 17-year old’s achievement seems marginally forgotten in the light of Novak Djokovic’s accomplishments.

Wimbledon 2021 Boys Singles: Samir Banerjee finishes second set in less than one and half hours

Samir Banerjee was made to work out for his victory in the first set and eventually won it by 7-5. But the teenager finished the second set in one hour 21 minutes, with the scoreline reading as 6-3. Banerjee became the first American Junior champion at this big event.

Previously, Reilly Opelka was the man to do it. Samir Banerjee has had an impressive start to his career on the ITF tour, bagging five titles. Of the 17 tournaments he featured in, he made in the finals 10 times.

The teenage prodigy booked his place in the finals by beating France’s Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2. On the other hand, Lilov beat China’s Juncheng Shang in straight sets.

On Saturday, Ashleigh Barty claimed her second grand slam title by beating Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. Barty, who had won the French Open in 2019, became the second Australian woman to win the big event since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980.

On Sunday, Novak Djokovic won a record 20th grand slam by defeating Matteo Berrettini, who won the first set, scaring the Serb. Matteo Berrettini came back from being 2-5 down in the first set to win it. The Italian won the tie-breaker, keeping Djokovic to four points.

But the defending champion hardly gave anything away in the next three sets and pocketed it 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. The 34-year old levelled his grand slam tally with the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic also became the fourth player in the open era to capture three successive Wimbledon titles. The others are Roger Federer, Bjorn Borg, and Pete Sampras. Berrettini was all praises for his opponent, hailing him for his achievement and took it as an honour to stand at such a massive stage.
