A top US chess player who was suspected of cheating after Magnus Carlsen withdrew from a major competition admitted to doing so when he was 12 and 16 but stated that he was now “clean” and was even willing to play in public in order to demonstrate his innocence.

Hans Niemann, the 19-year-old who defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen on Sunday at the Sinquefield Cup with the black pieces, made a commitment to himself that he was a changed man after admitting that as a youngster he had unlawfully used a computer to help him play chess on the internet.
And in a surprising interview on Tuesday night, Niemann said that Carlsen and other players, including the top blitz player in the world, Hikaru Nakamura, were out to destroy his career and that he was prepared to go to extreme measures to prove he wasn’t using a gadget to assist him to cheat.

Who Is Hans Niemann?
Hans Niemann is an American chess grandmaster and Twitch live streamer. He has been in the news because he withdrew from a major competition amid cheating allegations.
His full name is Hans Moke Niemann. On June 20, 2003, he was born in San Francisco, California. He has Danish and Hawaiian heritage.
He attended Top of the World Elementary School in Laguna Beach, California, before emigrating to the Netherlands at the age of 7. Niemann started playing chess at age 8 while attending Leonardoschool, a special school in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He finished elementary school at Del Rey Elementary School in Orinda after returning to California at the age of ten.
When he resided in Weston, Connecticut, he went to Weston High School. After relocating to New York City in 2019, he received his degree from the chess-loving Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School.
He is currently 19 years old.
His Career
On January 22, 2021, FIDE bestowed upon him the title of Grandmaster. He won the World Open Chess Tournament in Philadelphia in July 2021. On March 1, 2019, Niemann climbed to rank 88 on the Top 100 Junior Players list. He is ranked 45th overall and sixth among Juniors as of September 2022.
He is also famous for streaming both online and over-the-board chess on Twitch since 2018.
