Prediction
This US Open has included a lot of surprises. However, unseeded Ajla Tomljanovic had to defeat Serena Williams in the third round and then defeat the hotly favoured Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets to advance to the final eight.
Tomljanovic was one of just four players in the round of 16 and is the only unseeded player remaining. It would be interesting to see if she can maintain her lead against a foe who is considerably different from those she defeated in the first two rounds.
On the other hand, Jabeur played to her seeding, eliminating two Americans with lesser rankings in the first two rounds before defeating No. 31 Shelby Rogers and No. 18 Veronika Kudermetova in the subsequent two rounds. These matches were not simple.
On the good side, though, is that those two and the hard-hitting Tomljanovic share a similar playing approach. As she attempts to reach her first US Open semifinal, Jabeur will have had plenty of practice managing speed.
Who is most at risk? Jabeur, who is now rated No. 5 and is expected to go up after this competition, is undoubtedly the favourite because she is at the point of her career when she should be making deep runs in majors.
The task is nearly over for Tomljanovic. She defeated a legendary player who has won 23 Grand Slams. After that, she didn’t disappoint and added another victory. And in the considerably less energetic Louis Armstrong stadium next door, that victory was achieved. Nevertheless, she still ranks very low among the current favourites to win it all.
The hardcourts in New York haven’t historically been Jabeur or Tomljanovic’s favoured surface, but on Tuesday, the World No. 5’s tricky gameplay may be just enough to overcome the Australian’s baselining prowess.
