Jannik Sinner and Ilya Ivashka have never faced each other before.

Prediction

Sinner was 1/3 to win his third-round match against American Brandon Nakashima, but he faltered early on and came back to win in four sets. In just over three hours, Sinner defeated Nakashima 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 to go to the fourth round of this competition.

The Italian teenager did well to defeat Christopher Eubanks in straight sets in the second round after almost being knocked out in the first by a five-set match against Daniel Altmaier. Sinner had never accomplished that feat throughout the US Open Series this year, having exited in the third round of both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters before winning three straight matches today.

Meanwhile, Ivashka was on the court for his match against Lorenzo Musetti in the third round after shocking Hubert Hurkacz in the second round. And Ivashka won his third straight match in four sets to go to the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in his professional career. Ivashka had only once in his career advanced past the third round of a Grand Slam, and that was at the 2021 Wimbledon.

In this match, where he broke Musetti’s serve seven times, he defeated him 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 43 minutes. That statistic was stunning because Ivashka had seven break-points to do it. Given Sinner’s season record, it might not be as simple this time.

Sinner is 20-5 this season on hard courts, and his losses were to top competitors like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Hubert Hurkacz, Nick Kyrgios, Pablo Carreno-Busta, and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Ivashka shouldn’t be a big problem for him in this situation.
