Sunny, alongside Sir Don Bradman, Allan Border, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, has been considered as one of the greatest Test batsmen ever representing Team India in world cricket.
Gavaskar scored 10,122 runs out of the 125 tests matches he played, at an average of 51.12 becoming the first-ever batsman to score 10,000 runs in cricket. He had the maximum record of 34 centuries in the Test match, a record of over twenty years before Tendulkar had surpassed it.
In his maiden game, Gavaskar smashed 774 runs against West Indies which included four centuries- and three fifties, with an average of 220 and strike rate of 154.80. By this feat, Sunil Gavaskar became the only batsman to score a hundred in both innings thrice in the same game.
Sunil Gavaskar was a member of India’s World Cup-winning triumph in 1983, even though his ODI success barely reached the heights of his Test career, owing in part because the 50-over format was conducted at least when compared to Test Cricket. However, from 120 ODIs between 1974 and 1987, Gavaskar scored 3092 runs.
Awards Presented to Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar was included in the ICC Hall of Fame in 2009 and received the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan honors in 2009. Later was given the Col C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for Cricket in India, three years later.
