Prediction

World No. 1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev easily defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech on Wednesday to advance to the U.S. Open third round. The 26-year-old avoided all three of his break points in the game, thus he wasn’t broken. He had one opportunity to break Rinderknech’s serve, and he succeeded on five of them to win 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.

The Russian scored 76% of the points during the two hours and 11 minutes of play. In addition, he had 34 wins, two fewer than the Frenchman’s 36, although he committed 20 fewer unforced errors than the Frenchman did, who committed 50.

Medvedev is now 36-12 in 2022 and 20-4 against the United States as a result of the two victories. He won the Open last year by defeating Novak Djokovic in the match. A finalist both in 2019 and 2020, he lost in the semifinals. He’s off to a great start, and on Friday’s third round, he’ll be looking to maintain the momentum.

On the other hand, with a stunning victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili, the 31st seed, Wu Yibing, the first Chinese man to qualify for the U.S. Open in the Open era, got off to the best possible start. On Wednesday, he continued his streak of success by narrowly defeating Nuno Borges, another qualifier, in five. Wu defeated the Portuguese 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, joining fellow countryman Zhang Zhizhen in the main draw. The match’s three hours and 46 minutes saw the momentum change hands between the two ends. Wu outshot Borges 32 to 59 but committed 81 unforced errors against just 55 for the Portuguese.

Wu, who is ranked 178th, won’t have a chance against the World No. 1 on Friday. He may, however, have an influence by putting on a strong performance and challenging Medvedev. The first two opponents were no match for Medvedev, who should also have little dif culty in the third round. He  should cruise into Round 4 in an uncontested fashion.
