The Grand Chess Tour 2022’s fourth stop was the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz. A series of rapid and blitz matches pit the best chess players against one another for the championship, a share of the $175,000 prize pool, and tour points. With three days of rapid games and two days of blitz, the event began on August 24 and culminated on August 31.
Prior to participating in the double round-robin of blitz, the top 10 grandmasters played in a rapid chess round-robin. Blitz and rapid chess were included throughout the format to keep viewers interested and make them eagerly anticipate the games each day. Over the course of the first three days, a ten-player single round-robin rapid chess competition was held with a time constraint of 25 minutes for all moves and a 10-second increment beginning with move one. There were 18 rounds of 5+2 blitz played throughout the competition’s last two days.
Final Results, Standings, Nail-biting Race Decided, And Winner
Tuesday was the conclusion of the 2022 Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz thanks to GM Alireza Firouzja’s historic triumph. The blitz king scored 26 out of a possible 36 points, capping a 22-game winning streak during which he soared 107 rating points to surpass the 2900 threshold in the FIDE blitz ratings. GM Fabiano Caruana and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who both finished with 19 points, were surpassed by Nakamura, who finished second overall with a total of 21 points.
It was a treat for chess fans around the world to see Firouzja emerge as the undisputed Saint Louis Quick & Blitz champion after nine rapid rounds and 18 blitz rounds. Nakamura deservedly placed second, and Caruana completed the podium. Despite Firouzja taking first place in St. Louis, the topic of the town was Nakamura’s world number one blitz ranking, and he ultimately won that race by six points.
