Throughout her career, Serena has also been a fashion star who has utilised her apparel to make statements both on and off the court. According to Nike’s NKE, -0.02% chief creative officer, she is heavily involved in creating all of her tennis outfits, including her farewell getups.

Williams also debuted a pair of PE NikeCourt Flare 2 sneakers with a custom Nike “Swoosh” and her initials on Monday to kick off her farewell tour. She also wore gold lace deubrés, or ornamental shoelace tags, that were set with 400 hand-set diamonds in black ceramic and made in association with her Serena Williams Jewelry line.

On Monday, Williams shared the shoes fit for a queen on her Instagram stories, calling them “the most epic, flashy, amazing”.

She wore them with a tennis suit that was modelled after the competition gowns used by figure skaters and had a crystal-encrusted bodice that, in the words of the Nike press release, “alludes to the night sky during the event.” A six-layer skirt is also a part of the ensemble, paying homage to Williams’ six U.S. Open victories. Wearing the same costume as her mother, Olympia, her daughter, was spotted in the audience watching her US Open 2022 match.

According to a statement by Nike:

Inspired by graceful competition dresses worn by figure skaters, the embellished bodice and the skirt place Serena in the spotlight and allow her freedom of movement. The skirt includes six layers, a nod to her six previous title wins in Flushing. With a matching jacket and tote, the deep hue and crystal-encrusted bodice refracts light and shines brightly, alluding to the night sky at the tournament.”

After competing in the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York, the legendary tennis player and 23-time Grand Slam singles champion announced in the cover story of the September issue of Vogue that she would be hanging up her racket. And on Monday night, she defeated Montenegrin Danka Kovinic to move to the second round of the last Grand Slam of the year.

While Serena is scheduled to play World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the second round of the women’s singles US Open on the same day, she will team up with her sister Venus Williams for a women’s doubles match on Wednesday against Lucie Hradecka and Linda Nosková of the Czech Republic.
