During the clash of India against Pakistan at the 2022 Asia Cup in Dubai International Stadium, UAE on Sunday. The two teams were found guilty of slow over-rate during the match. As a result, both teams were forced to play with five fielders within the 30-yard circle on the final few overs.

Why did India and Pakistan get penalized for slow over-rate during the game?
India under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma failed to finish the 18-over mark at the given scheduled time of closing the innings. India had to bowl the last two overs with five players in the circle. Consequently, India conceded 23 runs in 11 balls and limited Pakistan to 147 runs in 19.5 overs.
On the other hand, Pakistan were also faced with the same incident, they failed to finish the 17-over mark at the given scheduled timings. As a result, they had to bowl the last three overs with five fielders inside the circle. This mistake proved to be a blunder for Pakistan as India scored 32 runs in just 16 balls to win the match.
Reacting to the in-game penalty, Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshvar Kumar said that it was a wake-up call for both teams after the forced play changes.
What is the meaning of slow-over-rate in cricket?
Earlier this year, ICC announced that teams will be penalized if found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during the game. As a result, teams will be allowed only four players outside the circle instead of five.
ICC Rules for slow-over rate
According to the ICC, the rules for battling the slow-over rate is, if the team is unable to bowl the first ball of the final over in a given schedule time to close the innings, the team will be forced to place an extra player within the circle for the rest of the remaining innings. The rule officially came into effect for the first time in a T20 match between Ireland and the West Indies. Since then, the match between India and Pakistan at the 2022 Asian Cup on Sunday was its latest example of implementation.
