Rituals Of This Festival

Bulls are given an oil massage and a dawn wash on this auspicious Bail Pola festival. To prepare their bulls for the parade that is organised with a spectacular show, especially in Maharashtra, farmers dress their animals in shawls, colours, bells, and flowers.

Oxen are not permitted to labour, and farmers allow the animals to rest for a day.

Rangolis and torans are used to adorn houses. Following that day’s holy procession of the cow, people make pooja thalis and exchange greetings.

For the customary aarti of the livestock, ghee is also used to light the clay lamps. To commemorate the day, the kids also make wooden bull replicas.

Significance Of Bail Pola Festival

Other names for this day include Pithori Amavasya and Kushopatini Amavasya. The farmers express their appreciation to their bulls for their assistance on this day.

The word “Pola” is also related with a number of tales. According to legend, Lord Krishna was assaulted on this day when he was a little kid by the demon Polasur, who was sent by Krishna’s maternal uncle Kansa. In the end, Lord Krishna vanquished the monster.
