Before the major starts, let us go through some of the top-heavy favourites who have a high chance to win the 2022 edition.
ATP US Open 2022 Top Heavy Favourites And Betting Odds
1- Daniil Medvedev
In four of the previous six Australian or US Opens, Medvedev has reached the finals. He also won the US Open tournament last year, defeating Novak Djokovic, who was ranked No. 1 at the time, to win his first major championship.
Prior to his title defence, the Russian is ranked No. 1 in the world, but Medvedev’s performance recently hasn’t been up to par. In Montreal and Cincinnati, Medvedev lost to Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively after capturing the ATP 250 hard court championship in Los Cabos. In the absence of Djokovic, he will be the player to beat, but Medvedev is far from a lock for the championship, especially after Nadal defeated him at the Australian Open this year.
2- Rafael Nadal
With four prior US Open victories, Nadal has typically controlled his body far better at this competition than at the Australian Open. Although he would have preferred to play more matches between his abdominal ailment at Wimbledon and now, the fact that Borna Coric defeated him in Cincinnati’s opening match doesn’t seem that bad given that Coric went on to win the tournament.
Although predictably rusty, Nadal appeared in good health in that picture. The Spaniard should be able to play his way back into condition, and given his 19-0 Grand Slam record this year, it’s difficult not to enjoy his chances.
The only concern which is a major issue is his health and the foot.
3- Carlos Alcaraz
Alcaraz is equipped with everything he needs to succeed, and it won’t be long until the 19-year-old Spaniard starts taking home Grand Slam titles. Alcaraz has had the finest success on clay, but he has also won on hard courts, including the Miami Masters 1000 earlier this year.
The Spanish teen is a great fit for New York because of his flamboyant demeanour and entertaining playing style, and he thrives in competitive games. In his maiden US Open debut last year, Alcaraz used that strategy to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and advance to the semifinals.
4- Nick Kyrgios
Due to his powerful serve, Kyrgios can defeat anyone on any given day, and the mysterious Australian has been paying attention to his game more frequently lately after putting himself off for years. Although Kyrgios is coming off a run to the Wimbledon final, the potential here is tantalising. However, his body isn’t accustomed to playing well in tournaments regularly.
In Canada and Cincinnati, where the Aussie lost to Hubert Hurkacz and Taylor Fritz, respectively, he began to appear visibly stiff and sore. Kyrgios isn’t much of a value proposition at this point because he is more of a contender than a sleeper.
5- Stefanos Tsitsipas
On the plus side, Stefanos Tsitsipas recently advanced to the final of a hard court Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and appeared to have success with a deeper return posture comparable to his clay court approach. The Greek has attempted to get past the third round of the US Open four times, but he has never done so, and he has never in his career claimed a victory on an outdoor hard court.
