Cricket South Africa CSA T20 League will involve a player auction and a fixed purse value similar to the IPL. CSA is the latest T20 league and the first league in the world after IPL to have the players signed through an auction, know the date and schedule in 2023

According to the rules set by the league, each CSA League franchise will have a 2 million USD purse. Each team is supposed to assemble a team of 17 players with the 2 million USD, but franchises can spend more than that if they have the means to do it.

The CSA T20 League and the IPL are the only cricket leagues to feature player auctions, as all other leagues have opted for the draft system.

CSA T20 league Auction and Purse Value

The CSA T20I League will have its inaugural edition this year and will be the first league after the IPL to feature a player auction. So far, every other cricket league has opted for the draft system because it requires a smaller budget than the auction model.

During player auctions, prices for players can soar very high if many teams are interested in the players. As of now, the budget for an IPL auction is 90 crore INR for each team. This is a really high ceiling compared to the CSA T20 League, where each franchise has only a budget of about 2 million USD (around 15 crore INR).

CSA T20 league will allow franchises to stretch player salaries

Along with the 2 million USD purse value, each franchise can only spend a maximum amount of 250 thousand USD on one player. Despite the limit, the CSA league will allow the franchises to stretch player salaries as per their desire.

For example, if a franchise directly signs a player for 400 thousand USD or buys him at that amount in the auction, the player will get the full amount. However, the franchise will only have $250,000 deducted from their purse for one player.

This means that while the CSA T20 league teams have a low purse for auction as compared to the IPL auction purse, the CSA teams have no bar limits on the player salaries if they are capable of doing so.

The CSA league player auction will take place within a month or two but the actual date is not known yet. The auction will take place once all six franchises release the names of the five players who have signed pre-auction contracts. The tournament will be conducted in January-February of 2023 with the teams competing in 33 matches.

Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners have acquired the six CSA T20 league franchises – Mukesh Ambani (Mumbai Indians), N Srinivasan (Chennai Super Kings), Parth Jindal (Delhi Capitals), the Marans (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Sanjiv Goenka (Lucknow Super Giants), and Manoj Badale (Rajasthan Royals).
